Gather the family and your curiosity for a journey back in time! The Washington County Historical Society will host the annual Living History Encampment Family Day at the Old Courthouse Museum located at 320 S. 5th Ave, West Bend. This year we have a special visit from Helen Keller, portrayed by Jessica Michna. Helen will reminisce about her fascinating life and give you an insight into her struggles and triumphs. Also, visit with a blacksmith, learn about the daily activities of women on the frontier and compare it with life today. You can enter a plains trader's tee-pee to see the many fascinating trade goods that were necessary for frontier living. Reenactors will also demonstrate music and flint knapping. Be sure to stop by all six camps! This special event will be held rain or shine. Entrance is free for Society members and children 12 and under. The non-member adults fee is $5 per person. Saturday, May 5, 2012, 3:00pm-5:00pm Grand Re-Opening Open House at Christ Church Museum of Local History. 2012 is the 150th anniversary year of this building. Come and marvel at the astounding tranformation the Church has undergone after having been painted and floors resealed which hasn't been done since approximately the 1920's! Located at the Dheinsville Settlement, corner of Maple Road, Holy Hill Road and Hwy. 145/Fond du Lac Avenue, Germantown. Thursday, May 10, 2012, 6:30pm-8:30pm The Native Gardner: Ho Chunk Corn Workshop with Rhonda Funmaker. Bear Clan member Rhonda Funmaker is a traditional Ho Chunk gardener and cook. Rhonda specializes in organic gardening, natural cooking and preserving such foods as corn, squash, beans, berries, buffalo, and breads and is dedicated to promoting and protecting knowledge of traditional Ho Chunk ways passed on to her by earlier generations. Join Rhonda in a hands on workshop at the Old Courthouse Museum at 320 S. 5th Ave, West Bend, to learn about traditional methods and the significance of corn to the Ho Chunk people. You will get to taste traditional corn pudding and hear about dishes made with corn and grind a sample of your own to take home! The Society member fee for this event is $10 per person, the non-members fee is $15 per person. Registration is required for this program as space is limited. Monday, May 28, 2012, MEMORIAL DAY 10:00am Visitation of six Germantown cemeteries 11:45am Veteran's Memorial, 12:00noon Flag Disposal Service After visiting area cemeteries, the group will arrive at the Veterans Memorial located at the corner of Park Avenue and Freistadt Road, Germantown. There will be a reading of the names of Veterans who have been added to the memorial. Following the reading there will be a Flag Disposal Service, After which a pot luck lunch will be held at the American Legion Hall across the street on Freistadt Road. Everyone is welcome.
